Max Blumenthal attended services at the Wasilla Assembly of God on September 20th and 21st. As he pointed out in his Huffington Post story, Sarah Palin left the church back in 2002 but she still spoke there occasionally, most recently June 8th. A few clips of Palin speaking at the church while governor of Alaska are circulating on YouTube and can also be found here.
Blumenthal went specifically “to see a pastor visiting from Kiambu, Kenya named Thomas Muthee. Muthee gained fame within Pentecostal circles by claiming that he defeated a local witch, Mama Jane, in a great spiritual battle, thus liberating his town from sin and opening its people to the spirit of Jesus.”
Here is how that scene must have played out. (If you look closely, you can see Palin. Okay, it’s Michael Palin.)
From Blumenthal’s post:
“Muthee’s mounting stardom took him to Wasilla Assembly of God in May, 2005, where he prayed over Palin and called upon Jesus to propel her into the governor’s mansion — and beyond. Muthee also implored Jesus to protect Palin from “the spirit of witchcraft.” The video archive of that startling sermon was scrubbed from Wasilla Assembly of God’s website, but now it has reappeared.”
This is video from the Wasilla Assembly of God with Thomas Muthee praying over Palin.
During Muthee’s recent appearance at the Wasilla Assembly of God, they made it quite difficult to record any of the content, presumably to keep it off of YouTube. Then again, if they weren’t concerned with the content why would they prevent the word from getting out? Hmmmmm.
Blumenthal will be posting a documentary on HuffPo next week “that will shed further light on Palin’s relationship with Muthee and the religious right in Alaska.”
