McCain-Troversy: Jerome Corsi’s Case Against John McCain

John McCain was not the NeoCon’s first choice as Republican Presidential Nominee. We all remember Rush Limbaugh and all the right-wing parrots regurgitating the talking points as they tried to bring him down.

Jerome Corsi has brought us some terrific bathroom reading (it’s loaded with crap), most recently Obama Nation, the smear-all fantasy for the far-right fringe about presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He has also given us such trash as Unfit for Command the dreck-laden book credited for costing John Kerry the 2004 presidential election.

Deanna’s Ramblings wrote a very interesting post which addresses The Obama Nation.

“Jerome Corsi is the author who wrote the book Unfit for Command, which really did the damage to Kerry and helped with the Swift Boating of Kerry in 2004 — the ultimate dirty trick. So that’s the kind of author we’re talking about here. So he’s at it again, with his stated goal of “keeping Obama from being elected.” And, of course, his views are being amplified over and over by right wing talk radio, and will — if Corsi has his way — become truth in the way that the Swift Boating of Kerry became truth.”

McCain meet Corsi

Corsi, a Harvard Ph.D. (political science) is a staff writer for The Weekly World News World Net Daily and has compiled an interesting assortment of smears against McCain at the time when Republicans were franticly trying to find a better nominee. Almost anyone else would have done. {Humorous note: I would have used the National Enquirer instead of ‘Boy eats own foot’ WWN but the Enquirer occasionally gets a story right, as they did most recently with the John Edwards affair.)

Corsi’s style is interesting. He ties in a hint of truth with innuendo and lies creating the appearance of fact. He also brings in factual information to support the irrelevant lie.

Some of Corsi’s ‘fascinating’ highlights:

“McCain’s personal fortune traces back to organized crime in Arizona, through his father-in-law …”. (60 years ago). Corsi played the mobster angle further by alleging that a reporter accused a manager of one of McCain’s father-in-law’s companies of having ‘mob ties’. This reporter was later killed.

In order to balance out this link, Corsi drew connections between McCain’s father-in-law and Charles Keating Jr. best known for the ‘Keating Five’ scandal for which McCain was involved. Additionally, he pointed out the McCain campaign’s lobbyist ties which are somewhat well-known now.

* * * *

I’ll let the title and the first paragraph explain everything here with this next story:

“Group tied to al-Qaida backs McCain for prez: ‘They will do all they can to turn Kosovo into a jihadist camp in the heart of Europe’”

“Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain has enjoyed strong support from a lobbyist group that backs the Kosovo Liberation Army despite allegations the KLA is a Muslim terrorist group with ties to criminal drug networks and al-Qaida.”

* * * *

McCain is linked through campaign manager, Rick Davis to “Ukrainian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who is suspected of having ties to organized Russian crime.” He then ties Davis into well-known liberal George Soros (whose name gets floated with every Democrat and MoveOn.org).

Corsi points out many times when McCain ‘asserted his opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin’. We saw evidence of this recently with McCain’s support of Georgia, thanks in part to McCain foreign policy advisor, Randy Scheunemann, who doubles as a lobbyist on behalf of Georgia.

* * * *

Interestingly, Corsi likes to rehash McCain’s lobbyist problems, especially Davis. What Corsi contends is that Davis is highly tied to liberal financier George Soros along with Theresa Kerry and Arianna Huffington and that McCain has been funded by Soros since 2001 – which I find highly interesting since that was when we noticed a strong political shift to the right by McCain.

He refers to legislation McCain sponsored with Democrats; campaign finance reform with Russ Feingold and comprehensive immigration reform with Ted Kennedy – which McCain co-sponsored before he voted against it.

* * * *

McCain campaign volunteer (non-paid), Juan Hernandez is a dual Mexican-U.S. citizen, according to a Corsi article. Hernandez supports the ‘Mexico first’ message which in of itself must by anti-American. Corsi, through multiple articles, links this position through Rick Davis, implying that this is also McCain’s position, especially given McCain’s anti-Conservative (therefore anti-American) immigration policy. After all, if Ted Kennedy co-sponsored it, how American could it be? I guess now we know why McCain flip-flopped on his own bill.

* * * *

Finally, McCain’s ‘ad guru, Mark McKinnon since 2000, had said back in February that he would step down if Obama was the Democratic nominee. McKinnon provided an explanation (not from Corsi’s article) as to why he’d be against working on an ad campaign attacking Obama.

“I met Barack Obama, I read his book, I like him a great deal. I disagree with him on very fundamental issues. But I think, as I said, I think it would a great race for the country.”

Instead of using the facts, Corsi attacks McCain’s camp as, once again, having ties to Soros.

“This validates everything that those of us who have reservations about McCain have been saying,” said Paul Weyrich, president and CEO of Free Congress Foundation.

“It’s unfortunate that this exposé did not come out earlier. Had the public known about the McCain-Soros connection and the support McCain’s ad guru has expressed for Obama, in all probability McCain would not today be the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican Party”.

Turns out, McKinnon apparently had a change of heart as he is still with the McCain campaign.

“I’m in ‘til the last dog dies,” said McKinnon.

McCain was asked about his thoughts on Corsi’s Obama Nation:

“Gotta keep your sense of humor.”

Obama campaign spokesman, Tommy Vietor responded:

“The old John McCain used to boast about honorable politics, while the new John McCain finds Rovian smears funny.”

“Honor is not a laughing matter. What does John McCain think is funny about an intolerant smear artist [Corsi] who called Pope John Paul II senile and claims the government lied about 9/11?.”

“McCain has said he wants to run an honorable campaign, but his belief that these smears are funny makes people question whether he now approves of the same reprehensible politics used to smear his own character eight years ago.”

Will McCain – and his strongly rumored bad-temper – keep his sense of humor if these Corsi smears of McCain trickle out to the media?

If McCain repeats any of the Obama smears from Corsi’s book as if they were fact, Obama would be wise to point out any of the above tidbits about McCain.

Quite evidently, the smears from Corsi and others did nothing to slow down McCain’s support among Republican voters. In fact, they demonstrated that Rush, Hannity and others have less influence than they hoped and imagined.

John McCain will be the nominee for the Republicans and the talking puppets now support him completely and are in full offensive against Barack Obama. Corsi’s Obama Nation is so riddled with misinformation that I was able to pick out a couple of inconsistencies before I even fact checked them.

Of course, Obama’s team came out with their own 41-page document which points out Corsi’s lies and provides facts. Unfit for Publication can be found at Barack Obama’s Fight the Smears website.

Once again, the smears against McCain did not work and so far the smears against Obama are not either. In fact, it is strengthening his base support and has a very realistic chance of backfiring this year.

Only time will tell.

  1. Leave the American Patriot Jerome Corsi alone! All he wants to do is spread vicious rumors to get a crazy war-mongering fool elected to the highest office in the land. He’s not supporting gay rights or anything really dangerous like that.

  2. Hilarious. Thanks TJ. Of course, Corsi only smears who and what he’s paid to smear.

    And good luck next week with the VP announcement. How will Hadassah take the news?

  4. Good post. The right wing don’t want to discuss this because they want the voters to think that Corsi is an honest to goodness journalist that wouldn’t tell a lie.

  5. The right wing wants Corsi’s smears to become facts (if it’s in a book, it must be true) because they can’t risk debating the issues.
