South Florida ‘welcomes’ Palin and Lieberman

Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin and Senator Joe Lieberman (R-CT) came to South Florida in order to reverse the polling trend of the last 2 weeks.  (Yes, I know I called Lieberman a Republican.)

A Sunday Rassmussen poll showed that Barack Obama has opened up a 52-45 lead in Florida over John McCain.  This is a huge change since a week ago the 2 candidates were tied and the week before McCain held a 5-point lead.

This doesn’t bode well for McCain as he really needs Florida for this election.  Last week, McCain’s campaign pulled out of Michigan and it looks like Pennsylvania is next.  Polls indicate that Ohio and Virginia have already shifted to Obama and Missouri and North Carolina (both traditionally strong Republican states) are trending toward the Democratic candidate.

Joe Lieberman attended a breakfast at Riley McDermott’s restaurant this morning.  The event “Lox in the Vote” is an obvious attempt for Lieberman to convince Jewish voters to vote for McCain.  Lieberman packed the event with about 70 people.  Yes, seventy.

On Monday, Lieberman spoke at Chabad of Boca Raton trying to convince attendees that McCain is stronger on Israel than his rival.

Lieberman also acknowledged that Obama’s personal associations are ‘fair game.’  I guess that would mean McCain’s past dealings would also be fair game, right Senator?

Lieberman also failed to show up for a 1 pm appearance at the Temple Beth Torah / Tamarac Jewish Center on Monday.  The McCain campaign has called last week to reserve a room.  At 1:20, the director of the synagogue contacted the campaign only to be informed that Lieberman would not be showing up.  Fifty people were in attendance for this non-appearance.

70 people for breakfast and 50 for the no-show.  Looks like McCain is pulling in a significant number of Jewish voters.  Pat Buchanan got more Jewish voters in 2000.

Sarah Palin has been telling everyone that she read in the New York Times (one of the papers Palin couldn’t name when asked by Katie Couric) that Obama was “palling around with terrorists.”  Of course she refers to William Ayers who during the 1960’s was part of Weather Underground and accused of terrorism.  Also coming up in conversation is Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former pastor.

Lieberman said that since we don’t know Obama very well, these relationships are important so we get an idea as to who Obama “will listen to when he gets in office, so he’s got to answer those questions.”

Yes, Lieberman said ‘when.’  Of course, we do know that McCain would align himself with lobbyists if he were to win the election.

About the Palin event from Monday:

Palin’s ‘glitzy, private reception and fundraising dinner’ raised about $1 million and was attended by more than 1,000 donors.

Dozens of starry-eyed Republican faithful and some of South Florida’s wealthiest political elite joined Gov. Charlie Crist, U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez and other Republican dignitaries in greeting the vice presidential nominee at the exclusive Boca Raton Resort and Club.”All the heavyweights were there, it was electric,” said event participant Yvonne Boice, president of the Boca Raton Republican Club. “I really truly feel she can be classified as the female Ronald Reagan.”

“She’s a rock star, and tonight she showed it,” said Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Palm Beach County Republican Party.

And they call Obama elitist and a celebrity.

The feel-good moment of the event:

A last minute guest at the fundraiser was 11-year-old Rachel Petersen of Deerfield Beach, who was allowed to stay up past her bedtime last month to watch the Republican National Convention. She said she wrote Palin that she was happy she was running and sorry she couldn’t vote for a few more years.

On Monday afternoon, Rachel’s dad, Don, was shopping when his cell phone rang. It was Palin, he said, and she wanted to thank Rachel personally for the letter. When Don explained how close they live to Boca Raton, she invited them to the fundraiser.

Rachel showed up in a pretty dress with a big smile. She was nervous to meet Palin and said she shook her hand and said, “I want to say good luck.”

Source information:  To get this post together, I referenced numerous articles in both the Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post.  I wanted to post this sentence in one of the Post’s articles.

“While McCain said he would run a campaign based on issues, he has shifted his strategy in recent days as he falls behind in national and state polls.”

McCain has shifted his strategy in RECENT DAYS!?!?!   He has run this type of campaign nearly from the get-go.  His campaign had pointed out quite a while ago that this campaign would not be about the issues.  Now they are saying that they can not win if the topic is the economy so they are going to get dirtier.

Either the Palm Beach Post thinks their readers have been asleep for the past 4 months or the author and editor of their story were.

The Gwen Ifill non-issue issue

The day before the Joe Biden – Sarah Palin debate, the story broke that Gwen Ifill, the vice presidential debate moderator, is biased towards Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.  This must mean, after all, that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will not receive fair questions from Ifill.

This is what the Republicans are claiming.  Former Republican Congressman John Hostettler from Indiana has called for Ifill to step aside.

Greta Van Susteren from Fox News claims to have broken this story to the McCain campaign.  They claim that they were unaware of Ifill’s book.

GretaWire (Van Susteren’s blog) asked 2 questions from her ‘What do YOU think?’ post.

To clean up some confusion…the Gwen Ifill moderator issue is simply this set of questions:

1/ will Gwen Ifill’s book sell better if Senator Obama wins? if the answer is that it won’t make a difference in sales, then her bias should not be questioned. If yes, then it should be.

2/ the book apparently has only a few pages about Senator Obama..then why is HIS name on the cover in the title? coincidence? or as a specific marketing tool to sell more books (i.e. make more money?)

I think these questions are fair.  Is Van Susteren suggesting that a professional journalist can not put aside personal opinion in order to fairly moderate a debate?  Was she offended when George Stephanopoulos asked Barack Obama about William Ayers and Weather Underground in the Democratic Primary?  The question was given to Stephanopoulos by Sean Hannity who we all know loves Obama.  And let’s not forget that Stephanopoulos was the communications director in the Bill Clinton administration and Hillary Clinton was in this debate where Stephanopoulos asked a clearly biased question.  If I recall, Greta was quiet after that debate nor did she state any objections prior to the debate about Stephanopoulos’s selection as moderator.

On Inauguration Day 2009, Ifill’s book ‘The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama’ will be released.  It was announced in July.  Here is the synopsis of the book from Amazon.

In THE BREAKTHROUGH, veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.

Ifill argues that the Black political structure formed during the Civil Rights movement is giving way to a generation of men and women who are the direct beneficiaries of the struggles of the 1960s. She offers incisive, detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama, and also covers up-and-coming figures from across the nation. Drawing on interviews with power brokers like Senator Obama, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others, as well as her own razor-sharp observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict and the “black enough” conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history.

THE BREAKTHROUGH is a remarkable look at contemporary politics and an essential foundation for understanding the future of American democracy.

Sounds pretty biased to me.

Last second responses of feign outrage by the right:

Conservative pundit Michelle Malkin wrote in yesterday’s New York Post:  “she’s so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.”

Greta Van Susteren:   “In law, this would create a mistrial.”

Former Florida Republican congressman Joe Scarborough who currently hosts Morning Joe on MSNBC stated:  “Let’s get real here. What would journalists say if in 2004 Jim Lehrer wrote a book called ‘Breakthrough, the age of Bush?’ ”

Joe, I refer you to my comment above about Stephanopoulos.

But not all on the right were critical:

John Weaver, former advisor to John McCain:  All of this hand-wringing, excuse-making and whining keeps McCain’s economic recovery plan away from the public.  Gwen Ifill is as honorable and fair a journalist as there is, and all of us in our business know that.”

John McCain told Fox News that Miss Ifill is “a professional” and said he thought “she will do a completely objective job.”

Sarah Palin said, “I’m not going to let it be a concern.”

Gwen Ifill:  “I have to let people judge me by my work.”

*  *  *  *  *

The Timeline:

July 23rd: The Washington Post published an article about the book’s release.  This story was picked up in hundreds of newspapers nationwide including the conservative Washington Times.

August 21st:  Ifill wrote an article for Time Magazine discussing her book.

August 21st:  The Obama and McCain campaigns have agreed to terms on the moderators for the debates.

August 29th:  Sarah Palin is selected as John McCain’s running mate.

Mid September:  An article appeared in The Washington Post discussed Ifill’s book and her role as vice presidential debate moderator.

October 1st:  Feign outrage by the right as they appear stunned that Ifill has a ‘pro-Obama’ book coming out.

*  *  *  *  *

So, this begs the question:  Has Ifill ever been accused of partiality?   Is there any evidence that she has bias?

Did Chris Wallace treat former President Bill Clinton with the same respect that he had Republican politicians?  Did Bill O’Reilly treat Barack Obama with the same respect as his Republican interviews?  Once again, was George Stephanapolous and Charles Gibson unbiased toward Obama?

Some believe that this is yet another ploy by the Republicans to further lower the bar.  By calling the moderator biased, they are hoping that Ifill thinks twice before asking any tough questions.  It also gives them yet another claim of gotcha journalism.

I think this is an embarrassment to the campaign.  If this really is an issue AND the McCain campaign didn’t know about the book until Greta told them, then this is not a campaign that should get anywhere near the White House.  It proves that they impulsively selected Palin without vetting her.  It proves that everything he and his campaign have done over the last 2 weeks has been impulsive.

Gwen Ifill’s response sums it up perfectly.

“I’ve got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I’m not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation.  The proof is in the pudding. They can watch the debate tomorrow night and make their own decisions about whether or not I’ve done my job.”

Sarah Palin’s very own Witch Doctor

Max Blumenthal attended services at the Wasilla Assembly of God on September 20th and 21st.  As he pointed out in his Huffington Post story, Sarah Palin left the church back in 2002 but she still spoke there occasionally, most recently June 8th.  A few clips of Palin speaking at the church while governor of Alaska are circulating on YouTube and can also be found here.

Blumenthal went specifically “to see a pastor visiting from Kiambu, Kenya named Thomas Muthee.  Muthee gained fame within Pentecostal circles by claiming that he defeated a local witch, Mama Jane, in a great spiritual battle, thus liberating his town from sin and opening its people to the spirit of Jesus.”

Here is how that scene must have played out.  (If you look closely, you can see Palin.  Okay, it’s Michael Palin.)

From Blumenthal’s post:

“Muthee’s mounting stardom took him to Wasilla Assembly of God in May, 2005, where he prayed over Palin and called upon Jesus to propel her into the governor’s mansion — and beyond. Muthee also implored Jesus to protect Palin from “the spirit of witchcraft.” The video archive of that startling sermon was scrubbed from Wasilla Assembly of God’s website, but now it has reappeared.”

This is video from the Wasilla Assembly of God with Thomas Muthee praying over Palin.

During Muthee’s recent appearance at the Wasilla Assembly of God, they made it quite difficult to record any of the content, presumably to keep it off of YouTube.  Then again, if they weren’t concerned with the content why would they prevent the word from getting out?  Hmmmmm.

Blumenthal will be posting a documentary on HuffPo next week “that will shed further light on Palin’s relationship with Muthee and the religious right in Alaska.”

Steal Back Your Vote

As a Floridian, I had a front row seat while the 2000 election was stolen from Al Gore. I saw the Democratic governor’s primary altered in 2002 in order to give the primary to Bill McBride over the much more formidable opponent – Janet Reno. As a result, Jeb Bush slid right back into the governor’s mansion for a second term.

I watched again in 2004 as black box voting gave George W Bush his second term and that supposed mandate. We all looked away when former Diebold CEO Wally O’Dell said the following: “I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year.”

I am tired of looking the other way.

I am tired of doing nothing about this.

Greg Palast and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are doing something about it. I have signed on to help do my part.

Palast and Kennedy have compiled a voter’s guide called ‘Steal Back Your Vote.’ There will be videos and articles coming as well. I will be bringing them to you also.

Night of the Living Vote-snatchers – from Steal Back Your Vote!
by Greg Palast

Excerpted from the Greg Palast, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Robert F. Kennedy’s comic book voter guide. See www.StealBackYourVote.org for more.

In 2002, George W. Bush signed the Help America Vote Act.

When a Bush tells you he’s going to “help” you vote – look out!

The result: in the 2004 presidential election, over three million votes – 3,006,080 – were cast and not counted. Like, what the !@#!?

That’s from the official data from an agency created by George Bush called the “Elections Assistance Commission.”  When a Bush tells you he’s going to “assist” our elections… (well, you get it).

Three MILLION ballots disappeared – Pfft!

And not just anyone’s ballots.  U.S. government experts reported, for example, that a black voter’s ballot is 900% more likely than a white voter’s ballot to get “lost” in the machine. Bush fired the experts.

Three million voters went missing in ‘04 – but that ain’t nuthin’!

Law professor and voting law expert Robert F. Kennedy Jr. warns that it’s about to get a whole lot worse.  Nasty new spores of the “Help” America Vote Act went into effect since the last election that have turned the process into a vicious game of “Chutes and Ladders,” with traps and tricks between you and your vote…

Example: the Republican Secretary of State of Colorado “helped” her state vote by eliminating 19.4% of the voters from the voter rolls.  That’s one in five !@#$#@ voters!

Over three million missing ballots – and now the voters themselves are disappearing by the millions.  Where the hell did they go?

Sarah Palin supports aerial hunting

The Defenders of Action Wildlife Fund put out a strong ad addressing Sarah Palin’s position on aerial hunting.

This is a must-see for all animal lovers.

And for the hunters out there from both parties – this is not hunting. This is not sport. This is just mean and cruel.

This is the mission statement from the Defenders of Action Wildlife Fund

President Palin – Vice President McCain: Whoops!

Yes she said it. Faux pas?  Freudian slip?  You decide.

The Democrats vetted Sarah Palin during her 2006 Alaska Gubernatorial run

We were all stunned by the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate. There have been tons of questions and ‘scandals’ that have come out in the last 10 days. The biggest question has been – DIDN’T THE REPUBLICANS VET PALIN?

Honestly, you really have to wonder. What we do know, is this is the biggest display of political pandering ever seen. But it seems to be working. The religious right appears to be charged up by this selection and the right wing parrots and their lemmings have begun rolling out their talking points. McCain has also received the Palin bump and passed Obama in the meaningless national polls. FiveThrityEight.com still has Obama in the lead for electoral votes, but expects a temporary push toward McCain thanks to the convention and the Palin selection.

So the question is, where does Sarah Palin really stand on the issues?

Back in 2006, after Palin defeated the incumbent Republican governor, the Democrats put together a research report on Palin.

Thanks to Cats r Flyfishn at Pennsylvania for Change for passing this along.

I have spent the last couple of days reading and researching the report and I’ll tell you, I disagree with many of her positions and there are some that I happen to agree with. The problem with Palin is that on the issues where we differ, I vehemently disagree with her. Her positions on social issues are so extreme that they are scary.

I highly recommend this read, though it is quite lengthy. We knew very little about Sarah Palin before last week and this report really enlightens as well as informs.

Sunday Funnies: Sarah Palin comics

Believe it or not, it has only been 9 days since John McCain selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Since then the vetting process began. There have been questions, cheers, scandals, stunned looks and plenty of jokes.

Here are just a few of the comics that caught my attention.

Jon Stewart best examines Republican hypocrisy

The Daily Show is in St. Paul for the Republican convention. In this segment Jon Stewart does what he does best – play clips of Republicans and the media as they contradict themselves.

Every Republican needs to see video like this.

In this segment Stewart looks at:

Sarah Palin linked to Jack Abramoff group and campaign ethics questions

The media tells us that Sarah Palin is a woman of character. Her story is the true American story. We hear about the mother of 5, the sad but inspiring story of her baby who was born with Down Syndrome. They tell us that she is pro-gun, pro-death penalty, anti-gay, anti-abortion. Ralph Reed – Mr. Christian Coalition, former partner-in-crime with Jack Abramoff and John McCain fundraiser is orgasmic over the selection. (Orgasmic is probably a poor choice of word considering Reed is such an upstanding religious man.)

But what really makes up her character? Trooper-Gate was the first scandal that broke into the media. Quite probably because it was an easy story for them and the media are lazy. The investigation is in progress and the papers are covering it.

I wanted to see what kind of campaign she is likely to run. I found 2 main ethics issues with the RGA behind them both – and since Palin is being touted as the ethical candidate, this was highly enlightening.

In 2006, when Sarah Palin was running for governor of Alaska, the Washington-based Republican Governors’ Association (RGA) sent a mailer to voters, which is a clear violation of Alaska state law.

This article appeared in the Juneau Empire in 2006. [Click here to go to original story.]

Pro-Palin mailer breaks state law

Knowles says Palin is responsible despite card coming from Outside

A glossy postcard promoting Republican Sarah Palin’s candidacy for governor violates Alaska law, state officials say.

And even though it came from an Outside group, Palin’s Democratic rival, Tony Knowles, says she’s responsible for the violation.

The postcard, featuring a picture of a smiling Palin, was sent out by the Washington, D. C.,-based Republican Governors’ Association and has been arriving in mailboxes this week.

“Sarah Palin likes to cast herself as the most ethical candidate, yet she has repeatedly refused to tell RGA to butt out of her campaign, despite assurances from the Alaska Public Offices Commission that it’s OK for her to call them,” Knowles said in a statement released Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Palin campaign dismissed Knowles’ claim as simply politics.

“What would Tony Knowles have us do? Have everyone give it back?” said Curtis Smith, spokesman for the Palin campaign.

Smith said the Palin campaign had nothing to do with the Republican Governors’ Association or the postcard.

“As far as I know, they sent this mailer out on their own volition,” Smith said.

Knowles said he’s asked a similar Democratic group to stay out of Alaska politics, and it has done so.

The Democratic Governor’s Association has much less money available than its Republican counterpart, however.

The Republican Governors Association did not return calls to its East Coast office after business hours and has no known Alaska office.

Alaska state elections law bars Outside groups interfering in Alaska elections, and makes campaign efforts such as the RGA’s mailer illegal, said Brooke Miles, executive director of the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

It’s a completely prohibited ad,” Miles said.

The ban on Outside money doesn’t apply to advocacy of issues and doesn’t apply to ballot measures, but Miles said the RGA mailer was obviously intended to help Palin beat Knowles.

“There’s no way they could even pretend it’s issues advocacy,” Miles said.

Miles said the Democratic Party has been in contact with the commission staff seeking an investigation into the postcard, but Miles said she would probably group the mailing in with an existing Democratic Party complaint about TV commercials aired earlier.

The commission could levy a small fine against RGA if it finds a violation, or it could issue a cease-and-desist order to prevent further violations. Miles said that in preliminary discussions she’s had with the RGA’s lawyer she was told there are no more mailings planned.

“What are we supposed to do?” That is what her campaign asked.

If George Soros or MoveOn sent out a flier to every single American household attacking McCain or pushing Obama, the Republicans would demand action and punishment.

But Palin pulls ‘what are we supposed to do’ and McCain (on the Tennessee smear attacks) cries ‘oh please, stop’ – this tells you exactly what type of leaders they are.

Obama demanded that the DNC take the high road in their ads and MoveOn shut down their 527 in honor of Obama’s demand. That’s a leader.

Palin and McCain showed weak leadership, never accepting responsibility for their actions (we have tons of examples on McCain and they’re starting to come in on Palin too). I love the plausible deniability from Palin’s office – what do they want us to do? She’s running for governor and she doesn’t know how to handle this? Now she’s running for VP?

Give me a break.

January 9, 2007

Alaska Public Offices Commission staff is recommending the commission fine the Republican Governors Association $2,350 for the ads it ran featuring Gov. Sarah Palin during the campaign.

That’s $50 a day for each of the 47 days of ads. The staff also suggests dismissing the accusation that the Palin campaign cooperated with the RGA, according to a Jan. 5 report from APOC director Brooke Miles.

Democrats filed the complaint against the RGA, saying that the group’s ads violated campaign finance rules. It’s one of several topics the commission will tackle in Anchorage this week – along with the complaints against outgoing Sen. Ben Stevens, filed by the Republican Moderate Party.

September 26, 2006

The Alaska Democratic Party says it plans to file an APOC complaint against the Republican Governors Association and against Palin. The Democrats say the RGA ads about Palin are not “issues” ads at all but can only be seen as a call for people to vote for her. They also say it appears the Palin campaign and the RGA coordinated on the ad, which isn’t allowed. The RGA says the complaint is a political stunt, that the Democrats know the ad is legal, and that there was no coordination involved.

In today’s story on third parties and campaign funding, Palin argues that it’s inconsistent for Knowles to blast her for tolerating soft-money ads on her behalf because he benefited from such ads in his 2004 U.S. Senate race. The Knowles campaign said that the national Senate race resonates outside the state – unlike the governor’s race – so you can’t compare the two elections. (They also say Knowles spoke out against soft-money ads in the 2004 race too.)

Palin argued that it is inconsistent for Knowles to blast her because he did it too? Really? Is that the argument?

Someone breaks the rule but because someone else did it 2 years before, it is okay for you to break the rule? Sounds just like the type of person I want to be one 72-year old heartbeat away from the presidency.

PBS posted this story from September 26, 2006 – Alaska Gubernatorial Candidates Spar over Big Ad Money

Television ads have sparked a war of words between the campaigns of Democratic candidate Tony Knowles and Republican Sarah Palin this week, with each side accusing the other of hypocrisy and dishonesty.

The Washington-based Republican Governors Association spent more than $100,000 on advertising time for Sarah Palin over the next week, according to records from local TV stations, as reported in the Anchorage Daily News.

One 30-second ad begins with vistas of Alaskan landscape and then a montage of Palin talking with people. A male voice then says: “It couldn’t have happened at a better time for Alaska. Sarah Palin, a bright fresh face with new ideas to hold down taxes and improve education, while moving Alaska forward.”

In a campaign press release, Knowles spokeswoman Patty Ginsburg criticized the group’s involvement, saying the ads belie Palin’s claims that she is running a grassroots, politics-free campaign.

“Her TV is being paid for by big drug companies, the insurance industry, big oil and tobacco,” Ginsburg said. “Check out campaignmoney.com and see where the RGA gets its money from. They include companies such as Pfizer, Anheuser-Busch and MassMutual Life Insurance, to name a few. One of the leading contributors to RGA has been Capitol Campaign Strategies, Jack Abramoff’s group.”

Former GOP lobbyist Abramoff is tied to a federal investigation into alleged illegal exchanges of gifts and favors involving lawmakers, their staff and other Washington officials.

Palin’s campaign fired back. “That’s rich coming from the Knowles camp,” countered Palin spokesman Curtis Smith. He predicted that the Democratic Governors Association is about to jump in the race, too, and said Knowles has questionable affiliations of his own.

“If Tony is so worried about affiliations, why did he appoint Bill Allen of VECO to head up his transition team in 1994? Not only is his company under investigation by the FBI, But isn’t he the leader of the ‘good old boy’ network Tony’s camp is chirping about?” read the press release from Palin’s Web site.

The bickering comes as polls have registered a shift in Palin’s favor. She came out of the August primary with name recognition and momentum from her upset of incumbent Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski.

Recent independent polls show Palin with leads of as much as 15 percent, according to Congressional Quarterly.

However, former two-term governor Knowles has proven campaign skills, and is hoping the strongest independent candidate, former Republican state Rep. Andrew Halcro will draw some votes away from Palin, according to CQ.

Tied to Abramoff’s interests and ads paid for by big corporations and 527 groups. Is that new politics? Does that make her a Washington outsider?

Her campaign’s response to these charges? “That’s rich coming from the Knowles camp.”

That’s leadership coming from the Palin camp. See the pattern in the response when Palin’s ethics are questioned? She’ll fit right in with the Bush – Cheney – McCain team.

To quote Joe Biden: “That’s not change. That’s more of the same.”

Dangerous Category 4 Hurricane Gustav update

Saturday, August 30, 2008 – 8:00 PM

Hurricane Gustav is an extremely dangerous category 4 storm. Winds are 150 mph – moving Northwest at near 15 mph – located 65 miles west southwest of Havana, Cuba. Estimated central pressure is 941 mb or 27.79 inches.

Once it moves past Cuba late tonight, Gustav could strengthen into a category 5 hurricane.

Gustav is expected to make U.S. landfall along the Louisiana coast possibly as a category 4. There is a high pressure area that may deflect Gustav on a more westerly course which would increase the impact on Texas.
